How Many Angelettes Can There Be?

These angels from the early seventies are amazing! They should play this song in middle schools across the world. An anthem for chastity. These British high school girls rocked the pop charts. Here is the B side of this record! I want more!

The other Angelettes from the fifties are very well hidden. I can't find any photos of them just YouTube videos of their recordings. They are doo-wop and really good.

So many angelettes, so few records.

Húsvéti Üzenet!

I hope the Easter Bunny stopped by last night and filled everyone's dreams and Easter baskets with woodland creatures and chocolate eggs!

Oh Yukko

Yukiko Okada jumped off her agency's roof after slashing her wrists in her apartment in Tokyo the day I was born. She was only 18, and nobody told me. My Nana made me a scrapbook of my life when I was 16, and in the back were 4 handouts with my birth stone, important dates in 1986, lists of celebrities that shared my birthday and newsworthy events of April 8, 1986. This wasn't on there. Baby girl was a star! She won Star Tanjo!

PACHINKO

In my grandparents' garage in Yuba City my Nana hid and smoked cigarettes while my cousins and I played PACHINKO! I loved the smooth heavy feel of the pachinko balls in my palm,  plunking the balls into the slot, watching them plink plink plonk down the spikes and the sound of the metal balls falling on the cement floor and rolling. I liked the knowing that with two smooth surfaces the rolling could go on forever. I think my Papa got the machine during the Korean war. I wonder how much stuff they let you bring back, does the Air Force enforce a baggage limit?

DONKEY SKIN

I have been asking my partner to screen Jacques Demy's Donkey Skin for such a long time now. On my birthday we finally watched it and it was wonderful. In films, as in life, I try not to set expectations, that way I allow myself to fall in love or detest freely, without remorse. Peau d'âne is MAGICAL and Catherine Deneuve is a DREAM.

I appreciate the morals against incest that this french fairy tale tells. I am sure the desire to marry your father is neatly squelched with this ditty!

I love that the rotting flesh of a freshly skinned donkey is so repulsive to everyone. I find her absolutely beautiful covered in the skin. The sets were to die for. Beds of moss, flowers and velvet, thrones of giant furry animals, servants of many colors, a jealous fairy godmother and statues of magical creatures, what is not to love? The perfect musical fairy tale brought to life by Demy.

Sugar Chile Baby

What a rockin' boy genius! At eight years old, Sugar Chile Robinson performed for President Harry S. Truman at the White House. During his performance, he shouted out "HOW'M DOIN' MR. PRESIDENT?" I imagine the President shouted back "OMG SO FREAKIN' GOOD!"

DOUBLE YUCK

On my way home tonight Huey Lewis and the News' Cruisin' Together came on the radio. This song reminds me of freshman year of highschool and the film Duets. Duets is the first movie that affected me so negatively that I almost felt ill. Perhaps it was the pace of the film, Paul Giamatti's dangly earring or Gwenyth Paltrow's stretchy black henna choker, but something was utterly disturbing.

WHO CAST GWYNETH AS A TRASHY BABY?  AND PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW BUTTERFLY CLIPS CONNOTE YOUTH.

WHO MADE THIS MOVIE??  I NEED SERIOUS ANSWERS.

DAY NURSERY BABIES

The Day Nursery Association began in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1909. The Day Nursery still provides affordable day care for children of working mothers.

What mother wouldn't want their child shushed and read to by sweet Mrs. Margaret Little during nap time?

"Did you ever stop to think — How hundreds of poor mothers in the city could go to work — How their children could get any “bringing up”  or any moral training — How women with small children and no help could do any shopping — If it were not for the Day Nursery?

Do You Know — That the Day Nursery boards a child from sun-up to sun-down, furnishing a noonday meal and a light lunch for 5 cents. –  That practically every child admitted to the Day Nursery gains on an average of two pounds a month. — That even spoiled and naughty children yield to the gentle discipline and refined atmosphere of the nursery and very soon become good little citizens. — That for many children of preschool age it is the only educational center." -Scranton Times, May 1921
