At a spring equinox
celebration tonight I saw the most beautiful version of The Little Mermaid and discovered a whole new genre of film -- Czech pohádky (live-action fairy tales). Although
Malá mořská víla did not strictly follow Hans Christian Andersen's original, it perfectly encapsulated the spirit of it. This film was slightly more self aware than usual and brought a bit more depth and characters into the mix. And, yes, finally an adaptation which mentions a MOTHER from which the daughters of Triton were conceived. The mermaids had no fish tails but they did have fantastical hair filled with sticks, flowers, flags and color. Please see this and enjoy the loveliness of the various sea and land royalty that permeate the screen.
