World Making

Books contain endless possibilities, worlds to inhabit and characters to befriend. I can't imagine a life or childhood without copious stacks of literature ripe for reading.

Tchotchkes

I have always wanted a typeset drawer to display my trinkets. Antique shops tend to use them for the same curatorial purpose but never have them for sale. Last summer I bought one at a garage sale and as I went to clean the cobwebs I found a few extra typesets (OH YEAH).

My kitten likes to climb the drawer like a ladder. Sometimes my tchotchkes fall and I scramble to put them back up, away from her grasp. It wouldn't do to have our toys get mixed up.

I Have Confidence in Sunshine

There was a semester at university when I listened to my Sound of Music record every morning before I left my bedroom. I favorite was always and still is "I Have Confidence." It is singsongy in the same way that I tend to sing to myself.  I truly felt like this song was my anthem. I don't know how else I could have made it through school (Thank you, Rodgers & Hammerstein). I've tried to karaoke it before but it was painful, so I will leave it to the exquisite Julie Andrews.

It starts out very timid then roars into life. Oh, sweet happy day!

I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN CONFIDENCE ALONE, BESIDES WHICH YOU SEE I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN ME!

I WANT TO LIVE IN THIS MOVIE.

TALULAH GOSH WAS A TOP CELEBRITY

Talulah Gosh had their first show the month before I was born. The spring of 1986 was very punk rock. Their songs make me happy. I suppose that's the point, I just love the sweet honesty of it all and the fun. You can tell they have so much fun.

My older sister had the same hair as Amelia at one point in 2003. She cut it all off and bleached it. Her style was a lot less twee but hip, nonetheless. I love their tube socks, culottes and Peter's Eraserhead hair.

You'll always be TALULAH, you'll always be YOURSELF! POP!

Malá mořská víla = PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY

At a spring equinox celebration tonight I saw the most beautiful version of The Little Mermaid and discovered a whole new genre of film -- Czech pohádky (live-action fairy tales). Although Malá mořská víla did not strictly follow Hans Christian Andersen's original, it perfectly encapsulated the spirit of it. This film was slightly more self aware than usual and brought a bit more depth and characters into the mix. And, yes, finally an adaptation which mentions a MOTHER from which the daughters of Triton were conceived. The mermaids had no fish tails but they did have fantastical hair filled with sticks, flowers, flags and color. Please see this and enjoy the loveliness of the various sea and land royalty that permeate the screen.

The Age of Not Believing

Sometimes I just wish I could 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' my way to another world. Wouldn't that be marvelous?

Oh, what a witch! Angela Lansbury is a dream.

THE QUEEN'S HAMLET

Marie Antoinette's farm is an agrarian wonderland. At the time that I took these photos, I was very much taken by the idea of building my own remote farm house. The pastoral ideal is perfectly captured here, I couldn't help but swoon at all the produce grown and animals kept as I wandered the grounds. I was so spellbound that I stole a tomato! I plucked it from the vine and put it in my purse much to the dismay of my companion. I took it back to Paris, contemplated it for a few days, took its picture and then ate it. It was delicious.

Hang in there, Kitten!

Gingerbread Houses

Located less than a mile from my house and a few blocks from the Charlie Chaplin's former studio are the sweetest gingerbread houses. Although the insides have had strange additions, the architecture remains idyllic. These relics of 1922 bring a bit of whimsy to my side of West Hollywood (there are quite a few old Hollywood apartments to be discovered in this town). Built for Chaplin, lived in by STARS

WHOA DONOVAN

I have been piously listening to Donovan's A Gift From a Flower to a Garden and making up my own lyrics for a few months now. Tonight I did a little bit of Donovan discovery and GUESS WHAT??

He starred in a live action PIED PIPER movie directed by JACQUES DEMY in 1972!!

WHHHAATTTTT???

I NEED TO WATCH THIS NOW

Thank you universe for handing me such a beautiful convergence of all of my interests.

P.S. I really want the blue moons and shooting stars velour shirt and the purple pants in the above video.

[EDIT: I watched it and it was very good, more historical than fairytale. I was happily surprised to find that Jack Wild, of Pufnstuf fame (another story which touts magical piping), played a starring role.]

Y Bwthyn Bach

A little Welsh girl
Stumbles upon a tiny cottage
She goes inside for tea
Whereupon she meets the Duchess of York
Who brought along all of her friends
They took lots of pictures
Much later in the day,
following the Sun
the princesses came out to play,
but everyone was gone.

NOTE: I WANT TO GO TO THERE

Judy & Liza

There is something so special about these two ladies. I went most of my life not knowing one birthed the other and since I have, all has felt right in the world. SHOWBIZ FAMILY[5 photos from gummgirl and second to last photo colored by sourpatchdarling]
